Upon completion of a contract in San Diego, California, Traylor Pacific needed their barges demobilized and brought back to the Port of Los Angeles. Traylor put in one call to Curtin Maritime and the Sarah C was sent straight to San Diego. In two days’ time, Curtin Maritime successfully demobilized two derrick barges, two deck barges, and one anchor scow from San Diego and towed them back to Long Beach, California. The project was completed on-time, on-budget, and met all of the goals of our customer.

Brittan Industries requested Curtin Maritime to provide ocean towing services to support Brittan during their contract to dredge the Army Corps docks in Sausalito, California. Curtin Maritime relocated our Long Beach-based tugboat, Sarah C, to Sausalito in order to provide around the clock support to our customer. While there, CMC was responsible for towing a 300 yard scow to and from the Alcatraz dump site, dumping approximately eleven scows a day without any delay or incidents during the entirety of the job.

With heavy recreational boat traffic and a very narrow channel surrounding the job site, the environment was not always conducive to progress and efficiency, but Curtin Maritime was able to push through and perform with the level of integrity and excellence our company is known for.

Upon submission of our proposal, PTS decided to contract Curtin Maritime to provide the tugboat portion of the job. Curtin Maritime brought our tugboat, Sarah C, and a full crew to Central American to work with PTS personnel and vessels.

Together, PTS and Curtin Maritime were able to provide the best possible service to the Navy, and the job was completed on time without any incidents or safety issues.

The project included services such as tandem ocean-towing of two barges, mobilization of temporary moorings, fendering,and vessel support in ports in Guatemala and El Salvador. Curtin Maritime also provided demobilization of all assets from Central America back to the Port of San Diego, California. In all, the job was sixty-two days long spread across forty-five hundred miles, and was successfully performed without incident.

This job is a great example of the flexibility of Curtin Maritime. While CMC was underway heading north with a barge for another customer, the Dutra Group contacted Curtin Maritime to perform a mobilization of Derrick Barge No.24 from Alameda, California, back to Los Angeles, California.

While still underway, Curtin Maritime was able to come to terms, execute a contract, and issue insurance certifications for the Dutra Group in order to complete the job. Curtin Maritime arrived in Alameda to mobilize Derrick Barge No. 24 after finishing the northbound tow for our other customer, and brought Derrick Barge No.24 back for the southbound journey. Because the job was an existing voyage, Curtin Maritime had the flexibility to provide a very economical lump sum rate to Dutra.

For this job specifically, Al Larson Boat Shop called Curtin Maritime on short notice to have a small U.S. Navy barge towed from Puget Sound, Washington to Los Angeles, California. Al Larson required that Curtin Maritime get underway on the twenty-four hundred mile round trip within twelve hours of their call. Curtin Maritime crewed, stored, and fueled the vessels and was able to get underway with time to spare.

Morro Bay presents some very difficult conditions for towing and dredging. The currents rip through Morro Bay and the bar channel at over four knots. The Morro Bay bar channel is treacherous and unpredictable, at best. Additionally, the water depth and channel widths are minimal.

Curtin Maritime dumped over four hundred barges in just under three months for a total of 818 bar crossings in November, December, January, and February of an El Nino winter. With our Rapp Hydema winch, featuring rend and recover and open stance fairlead to accommodate a full shot of 2″ surge chain to one and a half inch Plasma Bridles, Curtin Maritime could continue to tow across the bar in unfavorable conditions and maintain the shortest make and break times for the fastest turnarounds possible.
